Swords- a deeper look

In the Spacious Tarot, the swords are the “realm of the mind.  This suit looks at how far the mind can take you, as well as confronting its limitations.” (C. Mallon)  Below is an exercise you can do with your tarot deck (using all cards or only your swords cards) using a Jungian Lens.

through the Looking Glass: An Exercise

Preparation and Intention Setting
Find a quiet space where you can focus your attention without distractions. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and set a clear intention for your tarot exploration. What mental blockages or obstacles would you like to explore? Allow this intention to guide your journey.

Begin by shuffling your tarot deck while reflecting on your intention. As you shuffle, visualize releasing any subconscious barriers and opening yourself to the wisdom of the collective unconscious.

When you feel ready, draw three cards from the deck. Each card will correspond to a key aspect of Jungian psychology:
  • The Persona (Card 1): This card represents the mask or facade that you present to the world. Reflect on how this persona may be influencing your perception of yourself and others, and consider whether it is contributing to your mental blockages.
  • The Shadow (Card 2): The shadow represents the hidden, repressed aspects of the self that we deny or reject. Explore how this card reveals the unconscious patterns and behaviors that may be contributing to your mental blockages. What aspects of yourself are you reluctant to acknowledge?
  • The Self (Card 3): The self represents the totality of the psyche, encompassing both the conscious and unconscious aspects of the individual. Consider how this card symbolizes the potential for integration and wholeness, offering insights into how you can transcend your mental blockages and achieve more balance.
Reflective Journaling: Take out your journal and spend some time reflecting on each of the three cards you've drawn. Consider the following prompts:
  • Did you draw a sword card? What does this card tell you about your mental energy at this time?
  • What insights do they offer about the underlying causes of your mental blockages?
  • How can you integrate what you're sensing in a practical way?  Example: Do I need more rest?  Can I let go of what I'm holding on to?
Integration and Healing: Whether it's engaging in shadow work, exploring creative expression, or reaching out to a friend, take some time to nurture yourself on your journey.
